Derek Holden, Composer

Derek Holden (b. 1990) is a Brooklyn, New York based composer born in Birmingham, Alabama.

An enthusiastic collaborator, Holden has collaborated with or is currently collaborating with numerous groups and performers, including Garth Knox, Stranded Silver, Sylvia Hinz, Demondrae Thurman, Carla Rees, John Shanks, Matthew Kundler, Cynthia Simpson, Paul Bowman, Corey Sherman, Eric D'Alessandro, and Michael Abrams. In 2015, Holden was Composer-in-Residence with the University of Alabama Contemporary Ensemble. Holden has been performed throughout the US and Europe.

From 2018-2023, Holden will be staying relatively reclusive for personal reasons. Rest assured, he will not cease writing. Quite the opposite.

Holden has studied composition with C. P. First, Marvin Johnson, and Peter Westergaard,  euphonium with Demondrae Thurman and Ryan Black, and classical guitar with Michael Johnson. Holden is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). Holden formerly ran the Tuscaloosa New Music Collective, which morphed in Cicada Consort. He also works at C.F. Peters. and has been published by Potenza Music.
